What is your special talent and how long have you been doing it? I play guitar and write songs. I’ve had my guitar since 2006 and took lessons for a year, but then it sat until about 2 years ago and I’ve been playing almost every day. I’ve been writing since I was little and just recently started diving into writing songs.
Why do you love performing this talent so much? It’s just fun! I get to move my body while playing and the singing and writing is an excellent outlet for letting out how I’m feeling.
What is your biggest talent dream and why? To be able to play without having to look at the chords. That way, I don’t have to look up the chords and there’s not that awkward pause in-between songs if I’m playing for people.
Did you ever feel a struggle to keep going or sometimes want to give up? If so, how did you overcome it? Struggle yes, giving up, no. I like to think that I’m very in tune with myself, so if I feel like I’m having a really hard time or I’m just not feeling it, I’ll just stop and move onto something else. There’s always another day to pick it back up and try again.
Why do you think it is important for talent to learn the spirit of contribution to the greater good and use their talent for good? People struggle. If you have a talent that can help people ‘escape,’ why not use it and be that place for people to go? I understand there’s anxiety and many other reasons why people don’t expose their talents to the world, but if/once you can overcome that, you never know how many people you can help.
Who are some of your biggest influences and how do they inspire you? Evan Honer, Joe Jordan, Daniel Command (Dancbearded.) Just to name a few. Evan Honer and Joe Jordan are big musical influences. Their lyrics are very relatable, I love their style, and they just seem like really cool, down to earth guys I could hang out with. I’ve been watching Dan on YouTube for around 7 years now. This guy has shaped how I think and see the world on a profound level. He’s speaks his mind, is very honest, and comes at things from a very logical perspective, but also has ‘receipts’ to back it up. He’s another one who is just very personable, which I respect massively.
What’s your favorite memory of performing your talent? Sitting around a campfire and playing for 100 university students in the middle of winter.
What is your best piece of advice you would give to any talent out there? Keep going and keep putting yourself out there. Have fun with it and don’t take yourself too seriously. We’re all human.
