How long have you been helping people with their talent and what got you into it?
I have been dancing for 33 years, teaching for 22. I knew from a very young age I wanted to teach and now that I’ve owned a studio for 5 years and travel around the US teaching, I get to help so many more dancers along their journey.
What has been most satisfying for you in your journey?
Getting to see dancers each year and see their improvements. Hopefully seeing them go on to dance themselves and create a career in the field.
How did you learn the professional skills you share with others today?  Who or what influences played into that?
Just many year of dancing at various studios, soaking up all the knowledge I could. I continue to try to take classes and talk to people in my field to evolve my knowledge.
Did you ever feel a struggle to keep going or sometimes want to give up?  If so, how did you overcome it?
I have gone through many times of wanting to quit. Take care of your mental health. Create boundaries. You can still love what you do and have peace of mind.
What are your thoughts on the concept of helping talent learn the spirit of contribution to the greater good and using their talent for good?
I think it’s great and needed! There is a lot of “me” culture and it should be an “us”. Contributing and uplifting others is how we grow and how the industry grows in a positive way.
Do you have other future aspirations for yourself, your business or training of others?
I hope to continue to build my studios, I am starting up new programs as we speak. www.influx.dance is a new traveling program that will be getting off the ground here soon, I would love to connect with studio owners that want to bring top education to your studio. I just want to continue to travel to teach, choreograph and get to know people.
Is there anything our audience could do to help with the above?
Please feel free to find me at Ianhowedancer.com and spread the word!
Please share any standout moments in your experience that would inspire other performers.
I remember getting my first job as a teacher and being so excited about it. I was getting to share my knowledge and further myself. Also getting my first job as a cruise ship performer… I traveled the world and got paid to dance for 7 1/2 years, I will probably never have an experience like that again. Take in every moment, you’ll find so many things that will enrich your experiences and then that you can share with others.
What is your best piece of advice you would give to any talent out there?
Always listen. Don’t ever think you’re above or better than someone else, celebrate everyone. Don’t forget to celebrate yourself too. Be willing to do the smaller jobs and create a GOOD name for yourself, it goes so far.
